Current Weather Conditions at
Wildwood Crest, NJ

Wildwood Crest is a summer resort community located on the Atlantic Ocean in southern Cape May County, New Jersey, about 40 miles south of Atlantic City.

The small borough occupies slightly more than one square mile of a barrier island known as Five Mile Beach. The cities of Wildwood and North Wildwood, and the borough of West Wildwood are neighbors to the north on the same island.

Wildwood Crest is the favorite destination of ten of thousands of vacationers from all over the northeastern region of the United States and eastern Canada.  Its year-round population of only 3,980 swells to as many as 85,000 on summer weekends.

No longer an actual "pier", the third Crest Pier is the borough's recreation center. The first Crest Pier was destroyed by fire in 1917.  The second was demolished in 1987 to make way for this attractive and functional building at Ocean Avenue and Heather Road.

The Wildwood Crest Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 has served the community since the borough's inception in 1910. The 45-member fire company is funded by the Borough of Wildwood Crest and through various fund-raisers conducted by the members and by the 25 members of the Ladies Auxiliary.

The firehouse is located at 7100 Pacific Ave., which is almost the exact geographic center of the Borough. While only 3-4 blocks wide, "the Crest" occupies almost two miles of Five Mile Beach Island.

The fire company responds to an average of 160 alarms per year. Being a resort community on a barrier island, the types of fires that we respond to is somewhat different than those encountered by fire departments in other parts of the county. We have very little industry in our response area, but life safety hazards can be rather challenging. Being surrounded by water, we also must be prepared to respond to marine incidents, including occasional boat fires.
